David Thomas

David Thomas is one of the few Western strategists genuinely embedded in emerging Asia - not flying in with a briefing pack, but living and working on the ground in the Philippines, with over 30 years of experience spanning Hong Kong, London, Sydney, and across the ASEAN region. He travels from Asia.

His keynotes and workshops centre on what he calls the North-South Corridor: the accelerating flow of capital, founders, and companies between developed markets and emerging Asia. At a time when most business leaders are still calibrating their response to a shifting global order, David helps audiences understand where the real opportunity sits - and how to move on it.

His insights are drawn from decades of deep immersion. He lived in Hong Kong through the 1980s and 1990s, running his own wealth management firm while watching the Sino-British handover negotiations unfold at close quarters. His first visit to Beijing was in 1989 - the year that showed the world how power actually works in China. Over the following 29 years in Australia, he became one of the country's most recognised voices on business and investment between China and Australia - co-founding the BRIC+ Program in 2006, among the first in the world to run investment study tours into all four BRIC markets. Today he is based in Cebu, married into the local community, active in ASEAN business circles, and reading the signals before they become headlines.

A Cyberport HK Global Ambassador for Australia and author of ten books on business in Asia, David's signature work Three Cups of Tea distils his philosophy into a simple framework: in Asian markets, you begin as a Stranger, become a Friend, and eventually - if you stay, show up, and invest in the relationship rather than rushing to the transaction - you become Family. Only then does the real business begin. It is a philosophy he has lived, not invented.

From the moment he steps on stage, David does something most speakers cannot - he makes geopolitics personal. His audiences leave not with a sense of the world's complexity, but with a clearer understanding of what it means for them, and what to do about it.

Speaking topics

The New Trade Map
How geopolitics is redrawing the rules of global commerce - and what it means for your organisation

The rules of global commerce are being rewritten in real time. Supply chains are being weaponised. Maritime chokepoints are being contested. Currency corridors are shifting. And most Western business leaders are trying to navigate this using frameworks built for a world that no longer exists.

Drawing on current intelligence from the ground in Southeast Asia, this keynote connects macro geopolitical shifts to real board-level decisions. David helps senior leaders separate signal from noise and act with confidence when the environment is moving fast - because the organisations that will define the next era are not the ones waiting for certainty. They are the ones who understand how to read the terrain they are actually moving through.

Audiences leave with a clear understanding of the geopolitical forces reshaping their industry, the ability to identify risks embedded in their current supply chain and market assumptions, and the tools to make better strategic decisions with incomplete and fast-moving information.

The North-South Corridor
The biggest commercial opportunity of our time is not where most leaders are looking

The world's attention is fixed on US-China tension, tariffs, and technology wars. But the most important commercial shift of the next two decades is happening somewhere else entirely - along the corridor connecting Mainland China and the Greater Bay Area, through Hong Kong, down through Southeast Asia's fast-growing economies, and on to Australia and New Zealand.

This is the North-South Corridor. And most leaders are looking the wrong way.

This keynote reframes how executives think about emerging Asia - and what it actually takes to move capital, founders, and companies intelligently along the corridor. Practical, urgent, and grounded in three decades of experience from inside every part of it.

Audiences leave understanding why most Western approaches to Asian markets fail before they start, how to build the relationship architecture that precedes successful cross-border transactions, and how to position their organisation for the growth corridor that will define the next decade.

Leadership in Geopolitical Times
Leading with clarity when the rules keep changing

The leaders who navigate complexity best are not those with the most information. They are those who understand the room they are actually in - who can read power, build trust across cultures, and make consequential decisions when certainty is not available.

Drawing on an extraordinary personal history and three decades of operating across the world's most dynamic markets, this keynote explores what it means to lead when the rules are being rewritten in real time. This is not a session about geopolitical theory. It is about the practical leadership required when the environment is shifting beneath you and your organisation cannot afford to wait.

Audiences leave thinking differently about how geopolitical shifts create commercial risk and opportunity, with a deeper understanding of how power and trust actually operate across cultures, and with greater clarity for leading when certainty is unavailable.

Three Cups of Tea: Relationship Capital in Asian Markets
In Asian markets, the relationship always precedes the transaction

Most Western organisations arrive in Asia with a product and a pitch. They leave wondering why it didn't work. The answer is not strategy. It is not pricing. It is that they skipped the most important step.

Drawn from David's most celebrated book - written on a rainy weekend in Guangzhou after three decades of living the principle - this keynote shows leaders what it actually takes to build trust in cultures where patience, consistency and genuine curiosity are the real entry requirements.

The framework is simple. In Asian markets, you begin as a Stranger. Over time, with patience and genuine curiosity, you become a Friend. And eventually - if you stay, show up, and invest in the relationship rather than rushing to the transaction - you become Family. Only then does the real business begin.

Audiences leave understanding why transactional approaches consistently fail in Asian markets, how to apply the Stranger → Friend → Family framework to real cross-border relationships, and how to develop the cultural fluency that turns introductions into partnerships.
