J-MILLA

J-MILLA is a proud member of the Marranungu people, who are the traditional landowners of the Litchfield National Park in the NT. Born in Darwin J-MILLA's life started hard from the get-go, yet he managed to find a way to stand outside the intergenerational trauma pathway that affects so many Aboriginal families. Losing himself in music and storytelling got him through and it was this part of his culture that he clung to. When J-MILLA noticed the power of narrative and its influence on those around him; mainly his brothers and sister - J-MILLA’s passion for writing lyrics and telling his own stories began. J-MILLA used this passion as a weapon to maintain a healthy mental state for himself and his siblings. His lyrical content swings between deep societal commentary and bangin’ club vibes.

At the age of 12 Jay’s mother applied and won a scholarship for him to attend Scotch College in Adelaide to give her eldest son a better chance at life…He is now a star on the rise

J’s innate ability to connect with youth of all ages and inspire them to become the best versions of themselves is a boon to any school or community.  A born motivator youth respond to J and his workshops in all manner of positive ways.

J-MILLA workshops can be purpose-built directly with you to ensure your unique needs are met.

Speaking topics

Hip Hop Songwriting

These workshops are two-hour sessions where J gets the kids feeling comfortable. He will sit and talk with them, share his favourite songs and film clips and connect with the students this way. They too can share some of their favourite songs, clips or films in return and J will discuss and use these pieces of content as pathways for deeper discussion and expression. In this space, J is adept at pivoting off into a songwriting workshop.

Dream Building

The ‘dream building’ workshop teaches kids to articulate their dreams and how to hold their dreams tight and believe in themselves to manifest and create their future as they see it and beyond.  They will each work away with their very own affirmation about their future.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

The  R.E.S.P.E.C.T. workshop is about respecting life in its totality – respecting your environment, your family, your elders, teachers, girls and importantly your community as a whole and yourself.

In dealing with Jay and the management team, things were simple and well managed. On site his willingness to be part of the event and talk to the kids never waivered and always was ready to do what was needed. We were a little unsure of what to expect, but he had the very young to the very old loving every minute of it – the performance was enthusiastic and inclusive. The message through his lyrics was moving.
