Before leaving the Public Service Jan Archer was the Deputy Commissioner for Fair Trading in Queensland. She had previously completed significant reform agendas within the criminal justice system, most recently with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, but also with the Department of Corrective Services and the Queensland Police Service.
Jan's experience includes other significant change management responsibilities including the amalgamation of two local government councils into one new entity; the establishment of new Divisions and transitioning of organizations as part of major government restructures; and the creation of new shared service models and integrated corporate service delivery for four government departments.
Jan had eight year's experience as a member of the Senior Executive Service with responsibilities in the delivery of public policy, government program and executive service delivery. Over that period Jan was recognised with an award by the Australian Institute of Management. Jan has also served as Chair or Deputy Chair on various Ministerial and Executive Management Committees in the public policy areas of education, housing, health, sport and recreation, as well as tourism and fair trading.
With others, Jan established the University of Queensland's Interprofessional leadership program, and in that capacity led five annual programs focusing on such diverse issues as service integration; community engagement; community, public and private partnership; creation of public value and corrective services collaborative leadership. These programs won Queensland University Teaching Awards for three consecutive years and were finalists at the Australian National Teaching Awards for two years.
To date Jan's consultancy services have included executive facilitation, change strategy, community and stakeholder consultation , leadership development and professional coaching. Needs assessment, reviews and reports as well as project management have also played a part in Jan's recent projects. Some of this work has had a very local focus working with local councils as well as local communities to develop visions for their futures and action planning to better achieve those visions.
Jan has published and produced materials in the area of relationship education, change management, and community action planning. As well she partnered with Queensland theatre company La Boite, to develop Corporate Theatre productions on issues of relevance to the workplace such as Work/Life Balance and Integrity in the workplace.
Much of Jan's work in the university, public and community sectors has focused on innovation, reform and the ways in which leaders of public, private and community organisations can engage in adding value to their enterprises.
