John Harkins

Australia - NSW
Since moving to Sydney, Australia from Chicago, Illinois in 1994, John Harkins has become one of the most sought after jazz pianists in Australia today and performs regularly with many of our finest jazz musicians such as Don Burrows, James Morrison, Dale Barlow and others.
He is a well established jazz pianist with solid credentials. He majored in classical piano at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York City and has worked with many well known American jazz musicians including the world-famous Wynton Marsalis and esteemed trumpeter Warren Vache, with whom he recorded the album "Easy Going" for the Concord Jazz label in 1987.

In recent years John has been the Musical Director and pianist for the annual Australian tours of US jazz/blues singer Barbara Morrison. John has been a featured soloist on Australian CD recordings of Nielsen Gough, the late Rolf Stube, Blaine Whittaker's Hard Bop Caf? featuring James Morrison and The Andrew Speight Quartet, which won the 1999 ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album of the Year.

John performs regularly in South East Asia with the Jazz Masters Quartet at the Westin Hotel in Singapore and the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul, Korea. He recently performed a 6-month tour of Japan as a solo pianist and singer. He appeared several times on MBC-TV in Korea on The Saturday Arts Stage program including a special TV performance with US saxophone great Kenny Garrett.

John is currently the resident pianist & vocalist at the Sydney Wentworth Hotel, a position he has held since 1995. He is a featured regular at Winebanc, Martin Place, Sydney, and often tours with Australia's finest Jazz musicians. John has worked with names such as with Dannielle Gaha, Darren Paul, Monica Trapaga, Belinda Emmett and Leonie Page.

The appeal of the former Chicagoan's easy vocal stylings and fluent, swinging piano are infectious...his inventive, energetic piano playing is solidly in the tradition of the great pianists Hank Jones and Wynton Kelly.
