Troy Sachs OAM

Troy Sachs shares his remarkable journey from a young boy born without a tibia to becoming one of the most successful Australian basketball players in history. Despite having his right leg amputated below the knee at two and a half, Troy’s love for sports never wavered. He excelled in multiple able-bodied sports before discovering wheelchair basketball at 14.

Facing a four-hour round trip for training, his dedication paid off when, at just 16, he debuted for the Australian Rollers at the 1992 Paralympics. His presence marked a turning point for the team, leading them to their first Paralympic gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games, where Troy set a still-standing record of 42 points in the final, earning the Most Outstanding Individual Performance by the Australian Paralympic Committee.

Over five Paralympic Games, Troy captained the Rollers, won two gold and one silver medal, and dominated both the Australian and international scenes, earning multiple MVP titles, scoring championships, and league honors across several countries.

Beyond his playing career, Troy has transitioned into coaching, mentoring, and advocating for the sport. He runs the Blues Wheelchair Basketball Club and leads Sydney Metro Blues to a championship, sharing his experiences to inspire others. With numerous accolades, including a Medal of the Order of Australia and induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, Troy’s keynote speeches focus on overcoming adversity, leadership, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
